A robot series by Yoshiyuki Tomino and featuring mecha by Kunio Okawara, Mobile Suit Gundam debuted on Japanese TV in 1979 and has since evolved into a Japanese cultural icon. This year is Gundam’s 30th Anniversary, and Bandai has created several projects to commemorate the occasion.
First and foremost would be the 18 metres tall, 1/1 scale model of the RX-78-2 Gundam in Odaiba, Tokyo. This magnificent work of art seeks to pay tribute to the significance of Gundam within Japanese pop culture, and has recently been featured as part of Tokyo’s bid for the 2016 Olympics.
Next would be a new Gundam animation series, called Gundam Unicorn. The series is based on the novel of the same name, and will be directed by Kazuhiro Furuhashi and featuring mecha by famed designer Hajime Katoki. The first episode will be released in Spring 2010.
Closer to home, Bandai is organising a two week long Gundam Fiesta event at Compass Point in Sengkang, with model displays and demonstrations by a Gunpla master from Japan. It will start tomorrow and we hope that you would drop by to take in the atmosphere as well.
At AFA, a time tunnel of the various animated Gundam series, featuring artefacts from past and present, would be a main feature of the Bandai area.
